Wildfires are raging – and the world has junked 45 climate pledges. Disaster looms, and little wonder

Writing in a piece republished from The Guardian, climate scientist Bill McGuire warns that the world is regressing on climate action even as more than 35,000 wildfires burn globally, pushing the planet's climate back toward hotter conditions from its distant past. Rather than accelerating efforts, McGuire says governments and trading blocs are retreating, citing data from climate platform We Don't Have Time showing roughly 45 abandoned climate pledges, evidence that backsliding, not just insufficient progress, is now the trend.

McGuire places the blame squarely on fossil fuel industry lobbying, arguing that as long as these interests dominate policy discussions, they'll keep getting their way. His call to action: climate advocates need to make more noise themselves, through protest, voting, and media pressure, to counteract industry influence.
